What to expect in a class
Our meditation classes are just like any other adult education class. Generally, classes begin with everyone arriving a bit early, and sitting on chairs in a comfortable room. The Meditation Teacher then comes in and welcomes everyone to the class.
The Meditation Teacher will introduce the subject of the evening, and then take everyone through a beautiful relaxation meditation. This usually involves focusing on the breath and letting all your worries and troubles slip away for a while. The meditation usually lasts 10 - 15 minutes. |

Then the Meditation Teacher will give a short talk on a Buddhist topic. Following this, the Teacher will lead another guided meditation, this time focusing on the meaning of the talk.
After this, there is an opportunity for a break (tea and biscuits) and an informal discussion with other visitors regarding the topic of the evening. Finally, after 10 or 15 minutes of discussion, there is a final opportunity to ask questions of the Teacher, and clarify any issues that have arisen during the discussion.
The class usually lasts approximately two hours.
People from all walks of life attend our classes - young and old, religious and atheist. Some simply want to learn how to meditate, and these classes are perfect for this purpose. Others want to find out more about Buddhism, and so the talk (and meditation) are of benefit to them.
Frequently asked questions?
Q: What are the benefits of meditation?
A: There are many benefits of meditation. Through meditation, gradually our distracting thoughts will subside and we will experience a sense of inner peace and relaxation. Our mind will feel lucid and spacious and we will feel refreshed. When the sea is rough, sediment is churned up and the water becomes murky, but when the wind dies down the mud gradually settles and the water becomes clear. In a similar way, when the otherwise incessant flow of our distracting thoughts is calmed through concentrating on the breath, our mind becomes unusually lucid and clear.
Q: Do I have to be a Buddhist to attend?
A: No, you can attend if you are Christian, Atheist or none of the above! The classes are primarily about learning to calm the mind and adopt positive ways of thinking, and they are equally useful for everyone.
Q: Will you try to make me into a Buddhist?
A: Not unless you want to become one! Our aim is to introduce as many people as possible to the benefits of meditation and to explain authentic methods of meditation and Buddhist teachings to those who are interested.
Q: Do I need to have experience of meditation before I come?
A: You do not need any previous experience, although many people have tried meditation at one time or another in their lives. There are many different methods of meditation around at the moment, but the methods explained here are authentic Buddhist techniques which have been used for centuries.
Q: Will I have to say anything or answer questions?
A: You can say as little or as much as you wish. There is no pressure to say anything or answer any questions.
Q: Is there any physical activity involved, such as yoga?
A: No. We sit in comfortable chairs and relax by using our minds, rather than our bodies.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Normal, comfortable clothes are all that is required.
Q: What should I bring?
A: Nothing special - just the money to pay for the class!
Q: Do I need to book in advance?
A: Not for drop-in classes - you can let us know you are coming if you like, but basically just turn up and enjoy. (Day courses and study programmes do require booking in advance).
