Building for peace in Leeds ![]()
“Only by creating peace within our own mind and helping others do the same can we hope to achieve peace in this world.” - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
For many years the students of the Kadam classes in Leeds had the wish to establish a full-time public Buddhist Centre to serve the whole city. We have now bought a beautiful property in Oakwood which is ideal for this purpose.

The Buddhist Centre in Leeds can now provide:
- A spiritual oasis of peace and harmony in a troubled world * An established presence in the city, helping us to reach many more people
- Meditation room, library, bookshop and World Peace Café open for use throughout the week
- The opportunity to spend time with spiritual friends whenever you wish
- A growing number of study programmes, drop-in classes and chanted meditations
- Retreats, courses and empowerments throughout the year
- Classes for all age groups and levels of interest
The centre in Oakwood can now start to offer:
- A stable ‘mother centre’ from which to help current and future branches to grow
- The facilities to train qualified Dharma Teachers for this purpose
- A base from which to offer school visits, hospital chaplaincy, etc
- Beautiful meditation rooms
- Visible location on a main road 2.5 miles from Leeds City Centre and very close to the popular and beautiful Roundhay Park
- Accommodation for 11 residents and the Teacher
- Easy access by public transport
- Organic food and Dharma Shop
“Practising Dharma is the only way to cure our inner diseases, and our Centres offer this Dharma to others.” - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
Kadampa Buddhist Centres belong to all living beings and are established for the purpose of helping them find lasting peace and happiness. NKT Centres are all under the guidance of the highly-respected meditation master and author, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, and follow a constitution drawn up by him to ensure the purity and authenticity of the activities they organize.
