Building for peace in Leeds

Help to establish a base from which Kadampa Buddhism will benefit the City of Leeds

“Only by creating peace within our own mind and helping others do the same can we hope to achieve peace in this world.” - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

For many years the students of these classes have had the wish to establish a full-time public Buddhist Centre in Leeds, to serve the whole city. We have now found a property in Headingley which is very suitable for this purpose, and have begun fundraising in order to pay for the deposit. We can definitely achieve our goal, but whether we do so or not will depend upon the generosity of those who care about the inner welfare of others and the long term provision of holy Dharma in this area.

Kadampa Buddhist Centres belong to all living beings and are established for the purpose of helping them find lasting peace and happiness. NKT Centres are all under the guidance of the highly-respected meditation master and author, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, and follow a constitution drawn up by him to ensure the purity and authenticity of the activities they organize.

What would a Dharma Centre in Leeds provide?
  • A spiritual oasis of peace and harmony in a troubled world
  • An established presence in the city, helping us to reach many more people
  • Meditation room, library, bookshop and World Peace Café open for use throughout the week
  • The opportunity to spend time with spiritual friends whenever you wish
  • More study programmes, drop-in classes and chanted meditations held throughout the week
  • Retreats, courses and empowerments throughout the year
  • Classes for all age groups and levels of interest

What the property in Headingley could offer:

  • A stable ‘mother centre’ from which to help current and future branches to grow
  • The facilities to train qualified Dharma Teachers for this purpose
  • A base from which to offer school visits, hospital chaplaincy, etc
  • A large and beautiful meditation room
  • Visible location on a main road 1.5 miles from Leeds City Centre and very close to Headingley
  • Accommodation for 6 residents and the Teacher
  • Easy access by public transport
  • Disabled access
  • Organic food and Dharma Shop
  • World Peace Café including outdoor seating in a secluded garden.

“Practising Dharma is the only way to cure our inner diseases, and our Centres offer this Dharma to others.” - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

A gift to future generations

This is a very special time for all those involved with Kadam Dharma in Leeds. We presently enjoy the good fortune of receiving teachings and support from a thriving group while being based in the Meanwood Road building which we have rented on a short term basis, and now we have the opportunity to help this situation take root and remain for the benefit of many generations.

What could be more meaningful than working together to share our good fortune with others. Venerable Geshe-la gave our future Centre the name ‘Ratnasambhava Centre’. Ratnasambhava is the Buddha the purified aggregate of feeling. His name indicates that over the years many people in this area will be able to achieve this goal, through the kindness of those who help right now to establish the Centre.

How we can all create special causes for a Dharma Centre for Leeds:
  • Accumulating lots of merit and dedicating it
  • Making prayers
  • Contributing practically
  • Giving money
  • Inviting other people to give or get involved

Making money meaningful

“Distracting enjoyments have no essence, therefore sincerely practise giving.” - Atisha

“From giving comes wealth ...” - Nagarjuna

“Continuous drops of water falling into a pot will make it full. First there is one drop, then two, three, four, until the pot is overflowing.” - Buddha

Resources take on great meaning when they are used in the service of others. What greater service can we give than to help people along the liberating path to permanent freedom and peace?

Please give what you can comfortably afford by helping in one of these ways:

  • Make a donation
  • Set up a monthly standing order
  • Make an interest free loan
  • Give a day’s income each month
  • Pledge to give at a later date

A downloadable donation form will be online shortly.

We are now looking to the Centre's future and starting to create the causes to buy a building which will be a long-term base for the Centre in Leeds. In order to make this happen we’re going to be organising some fun fundraising events. Here’s a taster of what’s going on.
